Welcome to the Senate Judiciary Committee! We hope you are all as excited for this year’s Harvard Model Congress San Francisco conference as we are. During committee session, we will be discussing topics that are both controversial and relevant to today’s political landscape, and we hope you come ready to delve into them enthusiastically. We will be considering the nomination of Diane Wood to the US Supreme Court and military commissions, both of which are fascinating topics that will determine the course of United States policy for years to come.
The conference is an amazing opportunity to learn about current events, meet intelligent and passionate students from around the country, and develop an appreciation for the way that the American democracy works. The key to making the most of your time in San Francisco is getting involved in discussion by taking risks, speaking up, and sharing your ideas. Having an understanding of the issues before the conference is great because it prepares you for making educated decisions and participating in high-level debate, but even more important is making sure that you ask questions during committee and full sessions and collaborate with your fellow delegates to form creative and viable solutions to these complex problems. Of course, the conference is also a fun experience in itself—the people you’ll meet are all looking forward to having a good time, and you’ll be able to spend your weekend in the great city of San Francisco!
We can’t wait to meet all of you in January, but in the meantime, we would like to tell you a little bit about ourselves and encourage each of you to email us with any questions you may have. Jyoti is a senior at Harvard from Boxborough, MA who lives in Cabot House and is concentrating in History and Literature with a secondary in Economics. During her time at Harvard, she has enjoyed singing with the Harvard-Radcliffe Veritones (a co-ed a cappella group), chairing the Women’s Initiative in Leadership, participating in community service organizations, dancing in South Asian cultural shows, and of course, helping to plan and staff Harvard Model Congress! In her free time, Jyoti enjoys reading, traveling, exploring new and exotic eateries, listening to an eclectic mix of music, and having long conversations with her friends.
Sam is a freshman at Harvard from Bernardsville, NJ who lives in Straus Hall and has no idea what he wants to concentrate in. Other than HMC, Sam is involved with Students for Education Reform at Harvard, and he also founded the Harvard College Scrabble Club this fall. Sam is a big college football and basketball fan, an avid music listener and concertgoer, and a lover of all board games.
We are delighted to co-chair the Senate Judiciary Committee and look forward to a rewarding debate.
Sincerely,
