Energy and Commerce

Dear Delegates,

Congratulations on becoming a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce! As your chairs, Eric and Zach, we are very excited to work with all of you for a great committee and a great conference. Although January may seem far off, our time together at Harvard Model Congress San Francisco is quickly approaching and we wanted to make sure that we took the opportunity to introduce ourselves and remind you that we are always here to help as you prepare for the conference.

Eric hails from the great state of Michigan and is a sophomore in Kirkland House studying government with a particular interest education and health policy. In addition to being on the staff of the Boston and Europe conferences, he is very excited to return to San Francisco for a second year. Apart from Harvard Model Congress, Eric is also involved with the Phillips Brooks House Association, Center for Public Interest Careers, Institute of Politics, Chinese Students Association, Science Cabinet, Health Policy Society, and the Relay for Life. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, writing, tennis, and spending time with family and friends.

Zach is a freshman originally from El Paso, Texas and is intending to concentrate in Government with a secondary in Statistics. In the past, he served as a Page to the U.S. House of Representatives and hopes to enter a career in law or politics in the future. Outside of Harvard Model Congress, Zach is an attorney for the Harvard Mock Trial team and participates in the JFK Jr. Institute of Politics Forum and Survey groups.

In this committee, we will debate the very important issues that concern energy and commerce, which this year will include the controversial discussions over offshore drilling and recycling electronic waste. Using parliamentary procedure, a fancy word for a quick-to-learn process that we’ll review at the conference, we will develop both debate and legislation that will not only address, but also hopefully resolve the concerns regarding these issues. Please be sure to read the briefings for each issue so that our discussions can be both thoughtful and well informed.

We look forward to meeting all of you in committee! If you have any questions or concerns before the conference, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Eric Chung
