Appropriations

Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the House Appropriations Committee!  You are lucky to be serving on one of the oldest and broadest-ranging committees in Congress.  We are both very excited to get to know you all during the conference, and we’d like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce ourselves.

Shohan is a senior in Quincy House studying Government with a secondary in Economics.  He participated in Harvard Model Congress as a delegate from the Benjamin School, and, as a staffer, has served as a committee chair and Speaker of the House in 2011.  January’s conference will be Shohan’s fifth Boston conference and tenth HMC conference.

Theo is a freshman at Harvard hailing from Brooklyn, NY.  He is a prospective classics or mathematics concentrator.  Besides Harvard Model Congress, at Theo boxes and is involved in both the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Black Men’s Forum.  This is Theo’s first HMC conference.

The House Appropriations Committee is arguably the most important committee in the Congress, because it controls how money is allocated.  Its members include some of the most influential and powerful ladies and gentlemen on Capitol Hill.  As a member of the Committee on Appropriations this conference, you will be dealing expressly with the issues of National Disaster Spending and National Defense Appropriations.  These are both important issues facing the Congress, and the nation at large, and demand your attention moving into the future.

We are really looking forward to the conference, and we hope you are too.  Be sure to read through your briefings carefully and review your role assignment.  We want to have lively discussions when we get to the conference, and we’re counting on you to prepare!  Please feel free to email us in the meantime if you have any questions.  We can’t wait to meet you at HMC San Francisco 2012!
