Welcome to HMC West Wing 2012! It is to you that our simulated electorate will look during the conference to solve the nation’s most pressing political problems, and we know that you are up to the challenge. As members of either the White House or the Republican National Committee (RNC), you will follow in the footsteps of political figures like William Daley and Reince Priebus. You will be responsible for setting the agenda of your respective party, crafting the messages of each party, and pushing for legislation that reflects the ideals of your party. You are in the position to directly influence the course of the conference, and we encourage you to embrace that opportunity.
Speaking from experience, we know that the West Wing is one of the most gratifying experiences available at Harvard Model Congress, and we, as your committee chairs, are here to offer you the resources and support you need in order to make the most of your time at the conference. In addition to being the best committee, we will also be the most fun! Before we give you some pointers on how to prepare for the conference, we’d like to introduce ourselves.
Taylor Shimberg is a senior from sunny Tampa, Florida, who is concentrating in Applied Mathematics, applied to computer science. This is her fourth year on the HMC staff, third year running the West Wing, and she cannot wait for this year’s conference. In addition to HMC, Taylor is a Harvard Admissions Greeter and Tour Guide, member of the Institute of Politics, and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. In her free time, Taylor enjoys running, traveling, and hanging out with her friends. She is excited to meet you all and can’t wait to begin work with the West Wing Committee. Devon Newhouse grew up in Pasadena, CA. She now attends Harvard. Where the future will take her, nobody knows.
With your role assignment in hand, it is now time to start preparing for the conference. We hope that you will begin researching your roles in the next few months and become familiar with issues relevant to the White House and Republican National Committee by using the briefings that are available on this page. If you have any questions, feel free to contact either one of us. We are always available to help you prepare and would love to discuss any concerns or questions you may have about the West Wing or the conference overall.
See you in February!
