Our names are Sebastian Wagner-Carena and Jed Rothstein, and we’re both happy to welcome you to Harvard Model Congress 2017. We’ll be co-staffing the National Security Council and working closely with all of you to make it one of the best committees at HMC. As many of you are probably already aware, the National Security Council (NSC) is tasked with advising the president on issues of foreign policy and security. Its membership consists of a variety of important security figures who are there to advise and help ensure that security decisions made by the Whitehouse are coordinated across government agencies. As members of the NSC you have a unique opportunity to approach some of the most important political concerns for the nation as a whole.
This year we’re going to be discussing the growing tension between Russia and the United States as well as the use of Guantanamo Bay and torture in the war against terror. Both of these topics have complex histories and are continuously evolving. It will be essential that you not only have a good grasp of the foundations we provide in the briefings, but that you also continue to expand your knowledge of the subject in the months leading up to the conference. Keep in mind the unique role that each of you have in the NSC, and come prepared to help guide our nation through some of the most challenging security issues it faces today.
We think that the topics for this year are going to create a fantastic opportunity for some interesting debate, but they should also hopefully help push you to bring a wide variety of ideas to the table. While we want all of our delegates to leave HMC feeling fulfilled, we also want our committee to be an opportunity for all of you to get to know students that share in your political passions. By the end of the conference our hope is that you not only grow academically, but that you also challenge and even broaden your own perspectives. We want to make your HMC experience as fun and engaging as the ones we’ve had in the past.
Over the course of the next couple of months feel free to email either of us with absolutely any questions you may have about the conference or just to get to know us. We’re incredibly excited to be your staffers this year and can’t wait to meet you at the conference.
