Welcome to Harvard Model Congress 2017, and welcome to House Homeland Security! Our names are Ben Porter and Maddie Zabriskie, and we are looking forward to chairing the House Committee on Homeland Security this year. We hope that you too are excited to join us in Boston this February.
The House is one of the most powerful and prestigious institutions in U.S. politics, and you should be proud to serve as one of its members. The House takes on a variety of issues that span the policy spectrum, and the topics we are covering at HMC this year – airport security and the interplay of technology companies and privacy rights – are certainly representative of that diversity.
Beyond delving into the intricacies of these policy topics, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process more generally. To do so, you’ll work with students not only from across the country, but also from all over the world. These students will legislate alongside you, share their interesting stories, and maybe even become new friends. At times the topics and debate may be difficult, but you will come out the other side having been exposed to a wide variety of opinion, hopefully broadening your outlook on many of these issues.
Please, feel free to contact us at any point should you have any questions or concerns about the conference, or if you would just like to introduce yourself! We encourage you to start preparing now: read the news, stay up-to-date with current events, and ask questions about the world around you. In order to help you gain a greater understanding of the American political landscape, each delegate is assigned an actual U.S. Representative to portray. We encourage you to invest enough time in research so you can accurately convey the positions of your assigned Representative. Some of the best HMC moments occur when we perfectly mirror debates going on in the halls of Congress.
As your chairs, we are excited to make this HMC experience the best possible. From passionate debate to exploration of resolutions, we hope this conference will inspire you to explore your interests in a new way, political or otherwise. Our goal is for all of you to walk away with great leadership experience and new respect for a career in public service, and to having fun doing so. We look forward to meeting you!
