Welcome to Harvard Model Congress 2017! Our names are Sun-Ui Yum and Hilda M. Jordan, and we are extremely excited to be chairing the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee this year.
As a delegate in this committee, you will be asked to consider some of the most broad-reaching topics in American society, and as a senator, you will be able to enact tangible change across policy borders and party lines within the next few days. In this committee you will be asked to inspect all aspects of these issues and find solutions that best aid all Americans and fall within party lines. As a senator you will have to weigh the moral, legal, and practical implications of the policies you choose to address these real and live educational issues. You will be working on issues that have none to little legal precedent, so be prepared for debate, political challenges, and unexpected questions that may shift your policies.
We hope HMC will allow you to grow in a number of different ways. By considering complex issues from wildly different viewpoints, by gaining a greater understanding of both our legislative system’s mechanisms and the change it can create, and by exposing you to other students from across the country who share the same or different passions, you will have the chance to broaden and question your understanding and perspectives on current issues while gaining new insight and making new friends.
As your chairs, we hope to make your HMC experience intellectually stimulating while enjoyably fun. Let either of us know if you have any questions about the HMC experience, traveling, the briefings, or anything else: we’re truly excited to be here and undertake these challenges alongside you. Can’t wait to meet you all!
