Welcome to Harvard Model Congress 2017! My name is Winston Huang, and I am looking forward to chairing the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
As a part of this committee, you will have the chance to probe some of the most exciting and critical areas of environmental public policy. This year, Environment and Public Works will be debating policy responses to such issues as water sanitation and domestic nuclear energy. As senators in this committee, you will grapple with maintaining a crucial balance between local constituent interests and national party concerns. You may also find that the policies you consider have international effects to take into account.
Beyond committee, HMC will be a unique opportunity for you to experience the legislative branch of American government and to meet other students from across the country (and world!) who share your passion for politics. You will be exposed to a wide diversity of opinions, and you will have the chance to broaden and question your own perspective on topical issues. You will also get to explore Boston and the Harvard campus!
As your chair, I am excited to make your HMC experience both intellectually stimulating and a ton of fun. A bit about myself: I’m a senior at Harvard, originally from Newton, MA. I study economics, with a secondary in computer science. Outside of HMC, I am a bass with the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, a concert choir on campus. Outside of Harvard, I hunt for cheap flights to travel the world.
Feel free to shoot me an email at any point to introduce yourselves and ask any questions you may have between now and the conference. I encourage you to start stepping into your roles as senators by staying attuned to current events and keeping an ear out for developments in the topic areas we will be focusing on in February.
I look forward to meeting you and hope to hear from you soon!
