Welcome to Harvard Model Congress 2017! My name is Yankang Yang, and I will be chairing the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. I hope you are all looking forward to spending four action-packed days at the conference discussing current issues, making friends, exploring Boston, and hopefully furthering your passion for government.
As senators in this committee, you will be tackling some of the most important concerns facing not only the United States, but the world. The way the US addresses critical issues surrounding energy and natural resources has massive implications for the future of our economy and environment. In addition, political considerations will be crucial as you discuss these issues. For example, one briefing that we’ll discuss concerns land and natural resource management across the country; the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will play an instrumental role in defining the development of the West and the balance of power between federal and state authorities. As delegates, you will have to draft innovative and effective policies that take into account the diverse and justifiably complex perspectives of a number of interest groups.
And now a little bit about myself: I’m a junior at Harvard College studying Electrical Engineering with a secondary in Computer Science. I am originally from the majestic mountains of Southwest China and have lived all over the United States. Outside of HMC, I’m a manager at Harvard Student Agencies, love the outdoors, and like good food.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. Before and throughout the conference, I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about HMC, Harvard, or life in general. I am so looking forward to meeting you all in February!
