Welcome to Harvard Model Congress Boston 2017! Our names are Jackie Martinez and Rebecca Ramos and, and we are very excited to be chairing the Senate Armed Services committee this year!
In this committee, you will have the opportunity to delve some of the most fascinating and significant issues affecting the United States both domestically and internationally. This year, we will be focusing on the recent bombings in Yemen, especially regarding the United States’ role in maintaining relations with Saudi Arabia and Iran while keeping peace in the Middle East, and [Boko Haram?]. Both of these topics will give you the chance to explore the balance between foreign interests and the domestic needs of the United States as you strive to address some of the key challenges and issues that the American people face today.
HMC is an amazing and unique opportunity to share your opinions about issues that you care about to other individuals who have the same passion for serving our country and our world. The students that you will meet at HMC Boston 2016 will become some of our nation’s leaders in the future – and so will you! Be sure to take this opportunity to really learn about our government and the work that it does, but don’t forget to have fun! Enjoy the chance you have here to learn and grow as leaders alongside your peers through collaboration and cooperation, and you will absolutely take a lot away from this experience.
Now, let us take a moment to introduce ourselves.
Rebecca Ramos is a senior studying Government and Psychology. Originally from the beautiful city of Seattle, WA, she now lives in Cabot House and has absolutely loved her Harvard experience so far. Over the course of the past year, she has staffed HMC conferences in Hong Kong, Dubai, São Paulo, and more, and she is very excited to return to HMC Boston this winter. Outside of Harvard Model Congress, she teaches local middle school students to dance through a program called CityStep, plays on the club Ultimate Frisbee and lacrosse teams at Harvard, works for the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative, and is the president of the Delta Gamma Sorority at Harvard. When she has a free moment, she also loves relaxing with friends, traveling and hiking around the world, spending time outdoors in general, and baking delicious desserts.
Jackie Martinez, from San Francisco, is a senior studying Government and Computer Science. Outside of class, she volunteers providing legal advice for Cambridge residents, and captains the Harvard Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team. Jackie has staffed HMC conferences in San Francisco, South Korea, and Brazil and is excited to return to Boston!
Please feel free to reach out at any point to introduce yourself or ask any questions that you might come across before the conference. We are happy to answer any questions that you have about the conference, our committee in particular, or anything at all! In the meantime, we wish you the best of luck with your preparation for your important roles as United States senators and encourage you to prepare for these roles by staying up-to-date with current events and researching our debate topics!
We look forward to meeting each of you in February!
All the best,
Jackie Martinez and Rebecca Ramos
