Welcome to Harvard Model Congress 2017! Our names are Harrison Satcher and Aidan Livingston, and we will be co-chairing the Senate Appropriations committee. The Appropriations Committee is perhaps the most unique and exciting committee of the Senate, as it has the important role of allocating funding for bills that have already been authorized (passed). This year, we will be discussing several exciting topics.
First, we will discuss and consider legislation to reform and/or strengthen science research funding, a federal program which has funded and continues to fund most scientific discoveries generated in the United States. Second, we will discuss Social Security reform: a hotly controversial topic on which everyone in Washington seems to have a different opinion. In addition, for the latter portion of the conference, we will be appropriating funding for the bills that have already been passed in Full Session, and will be faced with difficult choices in the process.
We’d like to tell you a little bit about ourselves. Harrison is a sophomore studying psychology and computer science, and this will be his second Harvard Model Congress conference. He also staffs the San Francisco conference and serves as the Executive Assistant to the Europe conference. He enjoys creative writing, reading, hiking, fencing, and volunteering. Aidan is a sophomore studying linguistics, and this will be his second Harvard Model Congress conference as well. Other than HMC, he also writes for the Harvard Crimson—and loves to eat, travel and read.
We would love to talk to you about all of the wonderful opportunities this conference has to offer; feel free to ask about college or anything else leading up to, during, and after the conference!
We are passionate about Harvard Model Congress, and want to ensure that each of you is sent forth from the conference with a deeper understanding of our nation’s system of government and a desire to serve our country–in government, community service, or whatever career path you ultimately decide to pursue. We are thoroughly excited to meet each of you, and get to know you. Please feel free to contact us at any time if I can be of any help to you as you prepare for the conference!
